Tuesday 7th July: Practice race!

Today we solved the weight problem. We received 39 kg in iron plates of different sizes. We fixed them together in 4 even packages and glued them on the aft and front port and starboard locations. Try to imagine the mess it makes when you have to work with large amounts of glue somewhere underneath the cockpit.

At 15:00 the start of the practice race was planned. We had to sail 5 miles into open sea to find stronger wind and waves. We topped 15,15 knots on our way there. We took a lousy start, we lost upwind speed for 15 minutes because of different sail trims, downwind we had one bad gibe resulting in a nice but tenacious hourglass and on the next downwind the tack line disconnected just before hoisting. We ended at the back of the fleet and returned to the harbor with the feeling that things can only get better from now on. Tomorrow at 11:00 the first official race.
