Thursday 10th July: Race day 2

Race 1: Nice weather in the morning. But already dressed in foul weather suites because rain is predicted to come in at noon. Wind S 12 kts. We tried to take a boat end start but found ourselves parked in second line while the fleet sailed away. We were already more than 10 boat lengths behind before we got to decent boat speed. Even then it was not enough. At the first upwind mark we were in before last position. Downwind we were able to gain a few places, to loose them again in the next upwind leg. We ended 62nd.

Race 2: Somewhat better than the first, but we hit another boat in luffing maneuver at the downwind mark. We turned our 720°. Only in the harbor we saw that we damaged the rear starboard pulpit of the other boat. We ended on the 60th position.

Race 3: Time for change!! We decided to have a fast start wherever there was enough room on the starting line. No more starting in second line on a potential favored spot. We also went for more tension on the leeches. And it paid off. We were able to hang on for quite a while to the leading group. We eventually finished on the 40th spot with a feeling that some changes can lead to a better result. We can’t wait to confirm this improvement during the next races.

On the way back to the harbor a very dark cloud served us a tremendous shower. Okay, no problem, we couldn’t imagine a better way to rinse the boat.
